Where have you been?

OK, so it should say: "Where have I been?", but ....

I've been traveling about every week: Fall River MA, Dallas, NYC and next week, Chicago. All company business and not fun.

Manchie and the kids love it when I travel because Manchie spends the night with one of them and you know how much mother-in-laws are welcome. Actually, our two kids-in-law don't seem to mind at all. Think they both enjoy Manchie coming over. Don't think it would be like that if it were me.

Macon and I went for our haircuts today. He's a trip. Our barber, Mr. Greg, asked me today if I had restraints in the car for Macon. Greg actually went outside looking for Macon while I was in the chair. The other customers certainly get entertained when we are there.

Knox and Macon went to Lowes this morning to build jack-o-lanterns (sp?). Their other Papa takes them to do the craft/building thing often. This Papa is the boring one.

Didn't see Katie this morning, but she and Hannah both had friends over to spend the night. Saw Hannah and her best friend, Skylar. Think Skylar is getting used to me....she took it all in without looking strange.

Manchie spend the afternoon at the store setting up for Christmas thingys. I stayed home so I could cook dinner (put "snaps" on the stove to cook). She and Marissa are going to Atlanta market this week for the Cash and Carry sale. Marissa has wanted to go and I had enough points to get a hotel room, so it works out this year.

Got to run..... start the grill.

Well....

it's been a long time and lot's of things have happened. Where do I start....?

How about the company I work for has closed the northeast manufacturing and distribution facility and I have been up there 4 out of 6 weeks dealing with the fallout from the closing. Did not make it in to my Charlotte office for three weeks straight.

Or, we could mention how lousy Manchie's business has been this summer. Or, we could ...... enough already.

Manchie and I have started with a new series at church called "30 Days to Live" based on the last days of Christ's life as a man. Odd, the series last for 6 weeks. We have had 2 meetings so far and I've missed one of them. Tomorrow's meeting conflicts with an appreciation dinner for volunteers at church and we have decided on the dinner. I may actually get kicked out of the small group for lack of attendance.

Holly just called and said Hannah (you know, one of the grandkids) may be coming over to stay with us tonight. Holly and David are going to friends for dinner and Hannah doesn't fit with the ages of the other kids. We'll find out if Hannah had rather spend the night with old folks or boring folks. Wait.... both of them fit us.

Oh yeah, one more thing. You guys can guess that I tend to be Republican. Was not excited about the three candidates that we in the race..... Obama, Biden and McCain. Then.... WHAM.... Palin...!!! One out of four at bad. Ordered stickers for my truck and a yard sign. I have to vote for Palin and that senator she has running with her.

Enough for tonight. Spent today running errands, including haircut with Macon, and working in the yard. Manchie says I should take a shower.

He's Back...!!!

It has been FOREVER since I last posted. My 3rd favorite niece has moved into her new house (I haven't been invited over to swim yet, but know it is only a matter of time before she has us over), one of my favorite sisters has sold a home, packed up and moved to the lake, I have participated in the closure of one of our business locations (truly a sad occasion) and Macon went with me for a haircut.
Today, Manchie is picking up Frank and taking him to Greer to stay with us for the weekend. Macon's birthday party is Sunday and Frank RSVP'd "yes" to the party invitation.
Griffin and his mom were at the beach last week and Jonathan stayed home to work, both his paying job and household improvements.
Holly's brood starts back to school this week (including David... though he has been working this week).

Independence Day

We had an exciting Independence Day vacation. I took off work Thursday, 7/3 and Monday, 7/7 for vacation. Let's see..... Thursday I did yard work, Friday I did yard work, Saturday I did yard work, Sunday we went to church and today, Monday, I'm washing the vehicles. I love a good vacation. Trimming shrubs, cutting grass, pressure washing the house, taking yard waste to the landfill... all exciting. Sorry, forgot to take pictures of our vacation. These vacations can save money on gym memberships.
Manchie and I are going to the bank today to take inventory of the safe deposit box. I have a couple of gold coins and we want to find out what they are worth, either as collector's items or as raw gold. After our visit with Joyce and Bill, Manchie has collected all our old gold jewelery: high school and college class rings, my gold chain (yeah, I had one back in the day), old watches that may have some gold, etc. She's trying to find the place that offers the best price per gram.
Tomorrow we go back to the real world of work in Charlotte.

Know where I stand

Jim Demint, Senator from South Carolina, sent out an email that contained a link to a website that I would like everyone to visit.

Guess Sarah and crowd are at the lake with Joyce & Bill this week. Bet they miss us and wish we were there with them so they could have some fun. Hope the weather holds out for them.

Hannah had a swim meet that started this past Friday night and finished up Sunday afternoon. Of course they let the swimmers go home for the nights, but they pretty much had to stick around most of the time. Manchie and I neither one got over there to see her swim. Manchie had gone to the neighborhood swim team meet Thursday night to watch Hannah, Katy, Knox and Macon swim. Don't think Silverleaf would have enough for a team without that crowd.

Griffin and his two keepers got home Saturday from a week at the beach. Griffin has been sick all week with what they found out was an ear infection in both ears and Jonathan had a cold all week. Great time at the beach...!! Manchie and I went by there to see them Saturday night after we left a wedding (not ours). Griffin wanted to kiss. Jonathan didn't. Ugh..!! Yuck..!! Sickness.

Long Time

It has been a long, long time since I posted and I certainly don't want my adoring fans to forget me, so.....

Just had a wonderful weekend in Littleton with Joyce, Bill, Holly, David and the grandkids (way too many to spell out each name). We arrived late Friday so we would make it to the Camp Willow Run program Saturday morning. Hannah, Knox and Katy had been at camp. Well, one all week and two for most of the week. Knox and Katy caught what Hannah had and they were "expelled" for a day. Luckily Holly had not left and she was able to go get them around 1 a.m. on Monday morning. They were re-admitted Tuesday. Bad news.... Bill caught what they had.
Joyce has retired so I guess we will have to go back more often so she will have something to do. She certainly does enough when we go. Bill may not care to see us again.... sickness, kids asking "Bill.... Bill.... can we go tubing..?? Bill... .Bill... will you fix my fishing line? Bill.... Bill" You get the picture. He was the model uncle this weekend.
Sarah and crowd are going to Littleton this coming weekend, so maybe we all should go back.
After we left Sunday, Manchie and I went by Henderson to ride past our old house that we built when we lived there. The current owners were out in the driveway washing the car with daughter-in-law (daughter?) and grandkids watching. Knowing how we are, you guessed it, we stopped and talked. They took us on a tour of the house. Looked much better than when we lived in it.
Then we went to Mooresville and spent some time with Frank for Father's Day. He's as spry as ever. At 91, he even forgets to use his cane sometimes and doesn't seem to have a problem without it.

Time Flies.....

when you are having fun. Everyone except my favorite daughter-in-law came over yesterday (Memorial Day) for lunch. Other than eating, we just played outside in the yard. Holly's kids broke the expensive swing I had spent hours and hours contructing from scratch, but then they tied the rope back together and continued to use it.
Holly's group had been at the pool in the morning and were headed back when they left our house... then to dinner with David's parents. Jonathan, Marissa and Griffin had been at the lake for the weekend and Marissa was working yesterday, so it was just Griffin and his dad for lunch. They stuck around awhile in the afternoon.
Manchie has had a decent month at the Greenville store so she went in for a couple of hours and moved things around. Not sure if she had any furniture in inventory that she could display. The antique store has also been pretty good this month. Charlotte is so-so.
Manchie and I are now back in Charlotte for another short week. Two weeks in a row that I have had to work 4 days. I could get use to this. Of course I would then want a 3 day week, then a 2 day week and ....... Manchie and I went to Lake Lure the weekend before. One of my high school classmates offered us the use of his condo timeshare in a beautiful resort in the mountains. It was a nice getaway. "Thanks Marvin"
Holly and Joyce have just about convinced us to go to Littleton the weekend the kids get picked up from camp. Guess our spring and summer will be short weekend trips. It will be nice to see everyone again.

Hello

Well, the "patient" hasn't recovered yet. He/she came through the operations and the tests ok, but had to be readmitted for a continuing problem. The specialists are now discussing a total memory wipe and reloading new. Guess that means she/he won't remember me after the procedure........ how sad.
Hannah was in a talent show at her school last Friday night and the girl can sing. She and a friend sang a Hannah Montana (?) song. They were really good and not just because we had to sit through some who were not.
We had a wonderful Mother's Day and Manchie's birthday party at our house this past Sunday. The guys cooked. To be honest, Jonathan cooked. Thank goodness for us. David brought a chocolate, chocolate, chocolate ice cream cake. Oh yeah, she got presents too.
Last night, Manchie and I went out to eat on her actual birthday. The restaurant she wanted has closed in Charlotte so we ended up in one we knew little about. Boy, was it GOOD..!
Later.

The Week

It has been an interesting week. Holly's kids had a choral concert at a local church Monday night that Manchie attended. My computer's hard drive suffered a major failure and was put on life support until a transplant was available. I am glad to report that the transplant was successfully completed today and the patient seems to be doing fine. We have to monitor (no pun intended) it for a few days, but I am optimistic.
Manchie went to Mooresville today to meet up with her best friend from high school to go out to eat dinner with her, her mother and Frank. We have to get home tomorrow in time ...... for something I'm sure.

Update: I rushed the patient back to the emergency room this morning and it turns out that the original diagnosis may have been incorrect. The transplant failed and we may be looking for another donor or we may just need a significant transfusion. It may be a system disorder instead of a major organ issue. The specialists are running all the appropriate tests and hope to have a treatment plan this morning. (Guess at my age I shouldn't be using a medical emergency as the metaphor, simile or analogy.... which one is it?)

43 Years...!!!

No, I am not talking about my age. It is the number of years since I graduated high school and, over the weekend, six classes of Littleton High had a combined reunion at the old school building. Two big surprises for me: the parts of the building we used looked really good for being closed so long and the people..... well, I'll leave that one alone.
Lakeland Arts uses the much refurbished auditorium as a performing arts theater and we used it and the old cafeteria wing (one enlarged room is now a dance studio) for the social, dinner and meeting. It was nice seeing classmates I haven't seen in years, but the nicest part was spending time with family.
Manchie and I stopped by Frank's on Sunday and took him out for a belated birthday dinner. At 91, he still amazes me.
Marissa and Jonathan say they enjoyed their trip to NY..... "...and a fun time was had by all." Haven't talked with Holly, but think she enjoyed keeping Griffin for the extended weekend and was also glad to see Marissa come home.

Much to do about much

The second part of Jonathan's surprise birthday was sprung today. Marissa went to his place of work, picked up him up and drove to the Charlotte airport. He didn't know anything about it beforehand.
They are headed to NYC until Sunday. Marissa got Friday night tickets to Conan's show.
Jonathan really did not know about this one.
Manchie and Holly both think the taping at the store went well today. They started around 12 noon and finished a little after 1 p.m. It will probably be on in the next couple of weeks.
Saturday is the day Manchie and I go to Littleton for the big reunion then off to NY for me on Monday.

Weekend & Then Some

Surprise, surprise..... Marissa had a surprise birthday party for Jonathan for his Big 3-0. She arranged it at the Wallace's lake house and invited not only family, but several of their friends. Jonathan knew something was coming because he had 3 people wish him a happy birthday that day. People that would not normally pay that much attention to his birthday, especially a week early. Marissa's grandmother from Highlands also came down. Holly, David and Macon made it too. We ate & ate & ate low country boil.
Marissa's great grandmother on her mom's side fell and broke her hip, so Marsha and Gay (Mom & grandmother) couldn't make the party.
We all chipped in and gave Jonathan an outdoor grill. When Griffin and his parents came in from the lake on Sunday they stopped by our house to see Frank/Grandaddy before he went home. Think Jonathan got most of the grill put together Sunday afternoon. Holly had come over earlier to spend time with Frank, so we got to see our kids again.
I took Frank home yesterday (Sunday) and then came on to Charlotte. Manchie is staying in Greer until Thursday because she and Holly have a television crew taping (digitaling???) a segment at the store space on Thursday and they have to get ready. It will take hours to get ready to tape what will end up being 2 1/2 minutes on tv.
I'm heading back to Greer tomorrow so I can go to Hannah's concert at the Peace Center. For Hannah and me it will be a big deal. Then back to work on Wednesday in Charlotte.
Manchie and I are going to Littleton on Saturday for my 43 year high school class reunion. I know... 43 year reunion? It is for five classes that includes Joyce's, Charles' and mine. Starts with Joyce's and goes through the class behind mine. I'll try to remember to tell ALL about it next week. Joyce says there are 161 folks signed up to attend on Saturday. Must be a good turnout with spouses because all the classes combined didn't have that many people...!!

New Stuff

Seems we have a busy weekend ahead of us. Manchie is headed over to Mooresville today to pick up Frank and then head home for the weekend. I was surprised that he said he wanted to go, but pleased. He told Manchie that he needed to get out of the house. We set him up in the spare bedroom downstairs and he has his own bathroom, so it is fairly easy on him. Main issue are the stairs to get into the house.
We haven't decided if we will go back to Mooresville/Charlotte on Sunday or not. Been thinking about going up to Biltmore to look at the flowers. I want to go through the house again since it has been so long and they have opened up so much. We would take Frank back Sunday, go to Asheville on Monday and I would go to work on Tuesday..... or not.
Hannah has her choral performance at the main performing arts center in Greenville this coming Tuesday night and I WILL BE THERE.
We'll probably end up doing something for Jonathan's birthday since Manchie and I will be out of town the weekend of the 25th. I'll let you know what we end up doing. The present has been purchased.

TGIS

Busy, busy week. Manchie and Holly did get to go to market (no "wee wee wee" jokes) for a day and ended up ordering some new things. Holly came to Charlotte Wednesday evening, they went to High Point on Thursday and spent that night with Frank in Mooresville. Holly made it back to Greer in time for the annual PTA plant sale. I stopped by yesterday when I got in town and we LOADED up the truck with plants Holly bought. Manchie ran up there this morning so I may have some yard work too.
We are all going out to eat tonight to celebrate Holly's birthday. Think we are headed to one of the local Japanese restaurants. When we go, we occupy a whole table..... 13 of us now.

OK.... here's the dinner list... going around the table ... Manchie, Bob(by), Holly, Katy, Macon, Knox, Hannah, Jonathan, Griffin, Marissa, Darrell, Flo and David.

Tuesday

My legs don't hurt nearly as much as I thought they would. Manchie and I went to the High Point Furniture Market yesterday and walked. Think Manchie may have done some other stuff like looking over new product and buying things for the stores, but I just walked and ate. Free food everywhere...... met you on the sidewalk when you got off the shuttle bus and there was food in almost every vendor spot. One vendor had a hot lunch, some had sandwiches and/or snacks. Liked the eating, hated the walking.
Manchie stayed over in Mooresville with her dad last night and I came back yesterday to go to work this morning. If Holly can get her crowd healthy long enough, she may come up for her and Manchie to go back to market another day.
We have three important birthdays coming up this month.... Holly is first, then Frank on the 23rd and then Jonathan. My favorite father-in-law and my two favorite kids.
P.S. Was told I had to also reference my sister's birthday on the 13th and ONE OF my nieces' birthday on the 15th. Not sure which niece........

School Night

Had a wonderful evening tonight. Came in town from Charlotte and decided to stop by the kids school for the bingo/dinner/silent auction night for PTA. It was Holly's last major event as the head fund raising honcho. It was a blast to see Hannah, Katy, Knox (saw him once) and Macon in their element. Manchie was there. She came in from Mooresville today.
Ate a Chic-Fil-A sandwich, cole slaw, sweet ice tea and a brownie, played bingo without winning and gave money to one of the kids to add to her silent auction bid.

Nothing much

Well, Frank proved he was right one more time. Months ago he complained about his back and some tried to convince him it was nothing serious. He went to the doctor and ended up with a fairly major back operation, especially for someone his age. Well, as I said, he has done it again.
This time he kept saying his "drain" was not working, even went to the emergency room one night for the ER doctor to say it was working. Today, he had it surgically repaired because he was correct. It wasn't working.
At least he is back in business. Manchie has been over in Mooresville since Sunday except for one day/night she came to Charlotte to work the store and see her wonderful, loving, exceptional hubby.
Holly, Manchie and I are all going to the High Point market next week. We'll go to Mooresville Sunday and then over to the market on Monday. I've got to go to work Tuesday, but not sure the girls' plans.
Hard to believe my kids are getting so old. Next month Holly will reach the ripe OLD age of 34 and Jonathan will hit the 30 mark. The following month Manchie turns...... (I am not going there..!!!)

Another weekend

Another weekend here at the Greer Moores. After my exciting week of jury duty, which ended with me NOT HEARING A SINGLE CASE, Manchie and I spent Friday afternoon and night getting ready for our yard sale. Saturday morning we got up early and set up everything out in the driveway. Not a bad beginning.
Then, early into the sale, it started pouring down rain. We went from a yard sale to a garage sale in a hurry. It stops raining so we go back to a yard sale. Rains again so we go to "hey, we have lots of stuff for Goodwill". Saturday became a work in the yard day..... cloudy the rest of the time.
Sunday, we had coffee ministry at church for the early service so we were home by a little after 10. While I was back out in the yard, Manchie got a call from her dad saying he had been to the emergency room the night before due to....... well, the doctor said nothing, but Frank and Jeff spent hours at the hospital. Manchie packs and heads off to Mooresville to go to the doctor's office with Frank today. Poor me had to watch the Davidson game all by myself.
Today, it's back to work for me. Seems like forever since I've been in. Guess I'll go around and re-introduce myself to the ones we have left.

Jury duty

I just had my first experience with jury duty. The closest I have come before was being subpoenaed (had a hard time finding out how to spell that one) and then told that I didn't have to show up. Today it was for the Summary Court, which, I found out this morning, used to be known as Magistrate Court.
Along with about 100 of Greenville County's finest citizens, I went to court at 8:30a.m. and sat for the next 3 hours or so. The judge and the attorneys went through the court docket for the week and then selected jurors for each and every one of the cases. Finally, I won some sort of lottery...... I got picked by the wonderful attorneys for every day this week. Friday is iffy, but the rest are fixed..... oooppss... didn't mean to say "fixed" when talking about court.... I meant I have to show up.
Hoping to have some interesting cases.

Whew.....

We had an awesome Easter. Manchie and I went to church this morning to help in the cafe and it was busy. We always seem to be slammed and I guess it was no more so than normal.
All the kids came over for a wonderful lunch/dinner of ham, green beans, mixed vegetables, mashed potatoes, orange jello salad, some kind of chocolate dessert and zucchini muffins. That Manchie sure can fix a meal.
The Easter egg hunt was a blast. Some eggs were left out on the grass to give Griffin a chance. Someone would point out an egg to him and he would pick it up..... then try to give it away..... then put it down.... then put it in his basket.... then take it out... then put it on the grass.... You get the point. We took loads of pictures and Jonathan & Marissa did video. I'm sure they will have them uploaded soon.
All the kids left and we are now watching Carolina playing basketball. The game would be much more interesting if they had a team to play against.
I have jury duty with a local magistrate starting in the morning. That should be exciting. Can't wait.

Easter

Manchie and I both had Friday as a "holiday". She was staying with her dad all week and I went over Thursday. Yesterday we both came home. She went to the store for a few hours and I did yard work..... today was a repeat of sorts for me. Good thing about the place in Charlotte, it never requires any yard work from me.
Our church added two services for Easter, today at 4 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. Since Manchie and I are working in the cafe in the morning at first service (of the three on Sundays), we went to the 4 service today. Lucky for us, Holly and her crew also went at that time so we got to see the grandkids. The church wasn't full by any means... about 2/3 maybe.
After church, Manchie and I dropped by to see Griffin. Jonathan happened to be home too and Marissa was at work.
All the local Moore's are coming over tomorrow for a free meal. Manchie is setting up an Easter egg hunt that reminds me of the ones in Littleton a FEW years ago. Jonathan and Baby Jim had to have help finding any.
It was nice to have someone answer a few of the mysteries of life for me.

Thursday, March 20, 2008

Mysteries of Life

Manchie and I are in Mooresville tonight spending time with her Dad and I got to wondering about the mysteries of life..... like....
1. Was it the best thing today when I heard Griffin say "Papa" in the phone?
2. Did Hannah really want me off the phone tonight so she could get a call from a friend? (I'm soooooooo glad Holly is being paid back..!!)
3. Has Sarah put up anything else for sale?
4. Does Macon like going to the barber shop with me or is it McDonalds afterward that he enjoys?
5. Is Joyce still not able to get a real hospital room?

Well, this deep thought has worn me out and I must head off to bed.

Sunday, March 16, 2008

Beginning

a new workweek tomorrow. Manchie and I are headed back to Charlotte today so she can check on her Blacklion store and head over to Mooresville in the morning. Frank is out of the hospital and it is Manchie's turn to "visit" with him while he is still recovering. Some of you remember what that is like.
Holly should soon have new pictures up on the website she created and manages for the business. Pictures may be from any of the three stores..... Palmetto Home & Garden, Blacklion or Buncombe Antiques. Business site is manchiesplace.com.
Check it out.

Friday Night Lite

None of my kids have been in a science fair recently nor have any been recognized on the school video system. Neither was called to the principal's office for a good thing. I haven't passed a major career exam. I did not stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night.

But....... I did post some new pictures...!!!

Tuesday, March 11, 2008

Flash Update...!!!

Talked with Manchie last night as she was leaving the kid's science fair meeting at school. Seems we had a run of the Moore's outstanding science brilliance.
As a Lego group leader, Holly made a presentation and showed a video of her team's Lego challenge. She was also recognized by the principal for her involvement. Manchie said she did an excellent presentation.
Also.... here it comes..... Katy's and Hannah's science fair entries were selected to move on to the county science fair and Knox's made honorable mention. Ain't they smart...?!!?

Latest Moore News

Latest news flash.... Marissa and Jonathan came by this afternoon with Griffin so we could see the results of Griffin's first hair cut. He now looks like a boy. No more baby.

Frank, Manchie's dad, has been in the hospital in Mooresville since last Wednesday night. Manchie went over Thursday from Charlotte and came home today. He was running a fever so they have been giving him transfusions and trying to increase his strength. The doctors are talking to him about inserting a drain from his bladder. Marissa told us all the medical stuff about it and the different options while they were here. Frank is much better now, but he is almost 91 and beginning to act more his age. He has always been so active and still went to McDonalds for the men's coffee corral in the mornings. He'll probably be a few days before he gets back to doing that. Manchie will most likely be headed back to Mooresville this coming week.

Hannah has a swim meet that started yesterday, Friday, and runs through Sunday. This one is in town at the center near Furman used for all the county wide championships and classic meets, so I'll probably ride over tomorrow and check it out. Don't know any news about Knox, Katy or Macon that Holly hasn't covered on her blog.

For all who did not look at Jonathan's blog recently, he passed his CPA exam...!!

Manchie's reopening of the store at Palmetto Home & Garden here in town was official on March 1, even though some things had already sold before. Holly has got the business on PeachTree accounting system and has developed a website (manchiesplace.com). She has more to do, but it is looking good so far.

I'm going back to NY this week for my fourth time this year. Getting old... both the travel and me.

Friday, January 18, 2008

Home at last

Been keeping my travel plans posted as well as Manchie and Holly's Atlanta market plans. Time for an update. Manchie and I are back home... safe and sound. Think she and Holly had a productive and enjoyable trip to market. I'm sure they walked several miles. Manchie got a pedometer for Christmas and wore it while there, but I don't have the foggiest notion how many strides are in a mile.

Manchie is re-opening her "store" in Palmetto Home & Garden, the Greenville merchant mall she was in until a few months ago. The "new" owner lasted about 6 months and then sold it to a group made up of an employee and two merchants with their spouses. They called her and asked if she was interested in coming back. Holly is going to be in charge of that location.

I was in NY a couple of days the first week in January, in Fall River MA last week and then went straight over to NY last Saturday. Got home last night and am working from home today. I promise we are not avoiding meeting up with parts of the family.

Holly and her brood left this morning for Maryland to visit David's brother and his family. Don't think they listened to either the weather report or Manchie about making that trip. Hannah gave up competing in a swim meet for the trip and I don't think she was happy about that.

Manchie and I were going to visit with Marissa and Griffin today, but found out they went to Highlands to visit M's Dad and then are meeting Jonathan at the lake tomorrow. I haven't gotten to see Griffin walking yet. The last time I saw him he was just taking a step or two. Jonathan and I are making our annual visit to the car show here in town this Sunday. Maybe I can sneak a visit with Griffin then. Oh yeah, and with Marissa and Jonathan too.

P.S. Why duz speel chek think i mispeeled Manchie and foggiest?? (Changed because my sweet niece suggested a different spelling...... still comes up as mispelled)
